Abstract:
This project continues the development and demonstration of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation services program for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The TBI Model System of TIRR was one of five original NIDRR TBI Model System funded in 1987. TIRR as an important partner in a multi-center effort to develop, field test and improve a uniform data set for characterizing individuals who incur traumatic brain injuries. This uniform data is currently being used to study system benefits, costs and outcomes. During the current funding cycle our model system is working on the following projects: (1) Evaluating the Effectiveness of Alternative Methods of Service Delivery Interventions after Inpatient Rehabilitation Discharge and After Other Post-Acute Treatment Pathways; (2) Post-acute Service Delivery Interventions, Needs, Outcomes, and Costs; (3) Identification and evaluation of interventions, including those using emerging technology, to improve vocational outcomes and community integration; (4) Development of Key Predictors of Rehabilitation Outcome at Discharge from the Rehabilitation Hospital and at Long-Term Follow-up; (5) Development of Key Predictors of Functional Outcome at Discharge from the Rehabilitation Hospital and Functional and Neuropsychological Measures at One Year Following TBI; (6) Determination of the Relationships Between Cost of Care, Post-Acute Rehabilitation, and Functional Outcomes; (7) Length of Stay in Inpatient Rehabilitation: Does it Make a Difference in Outcome? (8) The Implications of Violence as a Cause of TBI on Treatment Interventions, Rehabilitation Costs and Long Term Outcomes; (9) Implications of Violence as a Cause of TBI on Cost, Functional Outcome and Longterm Community Integration.
