Archived Project ID# 155 of the TBINDC Registry
Cost-effective Method & Frequency of Routine Screening for Proximal Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) in Persons with Acquired Brain Injury

Abstract:
This collaborative project will determine the risk of DVT, believed to be the major cause of PE, over time during the first 8 weeks after TBI by use of a serial screening protocol involving D-dimer measurement and ultrasound. A sequential case series will be enrolled at each center using identical protocols. This project should produce recommendations for type and timing of DVT screening during the first several weeks after TBI based on a thorough cost-benefit analysis. Also, it will produce estimates of the risk for DVT over time during that period, and give insight into the pathophysiology of DVT
